ROZA Association for women’s labor rights

ROZA Udruženje za radna prava žena

Who Are We?

Members and associates of ROZA are of different age, socioeconomic status, nationality and are mostly precarious workers. We are women who have personally experienced some form of injustice, discrimination or mobbing.

The Association originated from Women’s Section of CA Equality (UG Ravnopravnost) which, in turn, originated from workers’ protests and strikes in several factories in Zrenjanin in the period between 2003 and 2008.

We want to fight for better working conditions and to be active participants in future changes, not just passive observers.

What Do We Aspire To?

Our greatest values are solidarity with others, courage to step forward and speak up, as well as perseverance when facing the challenges. Our long-term goal is to form the Union of precarious workers. At the moment that is not legally possible in Serbia because only permanently employed workers are allowed to form a union. Since unions in Serbia are usually corrupted and insufficiently organized to provide help to those in need, we want to establish a different union, which will respond to women’s needs.

How Do We Do Our Work?

We travel all over Serbia to talk to female workers, hear their stories and document their experiences. We use this opportunity to educate them about labor rights and mechanisms for protection of those rights.

We are raising people’s awareness about violations of women’s labor rights through our publication[1], video production and participating in various events.

Through our Support Group we are working on empowering women from Zrenjanin and the surrounding area to defend their rights. We also assist unemployed women with finding decent work.

By providing support to female workers on strike and participating in marches and other public gatherings, we demand improvement of women’s position and their labor rights. We inform women about their rights and connect them with people who can provide help if their rights are violated.

By observing the situation on the field and needs of women from the Support Group, it came to our attention that establishing the Union of precarious workers was essential.

The biggest part of this work is voluntary. It came from our belief that we must organize ourselves in order to achieve dignified working conditions for all women. We are proud of the fact that we have gained trust of female workers and are receiving calls for support from women all over Serbia. We became recognizable and relevant interlocutors at seminars, round tables and public discussions.

Postale smo prepoznate i relevantne govornice na seminarima, okruglim stolovima i javnim panelima.

[1] When visiting women workers around Serbia, we have gathered testimonies about working conditions and their experiences at work. As a result, the publication Women are speaking was made, in which some of the stories we heard were documented.

Why Is Our Work Important?

– Over 40% of women in Serbia (in the province of Vojvodina that number goes up to 44,5%) are excluded from the labor market, compared to 27% of men.

– 65% of unemployed women want to work, but they are forced to take care of other family members.

– 67, 5% of all employed women work in the service sector, which is the least paid sector.

– 59% of women are employed by private employment agencies – most of them work in maintenance (cleaning), retail trade, education, healthcare and finance.

– Women in rural areas are mostly “helping members of the household” and they work up to 15 hours per day (work on farmlands, livestock care, elderly and childcare). They do not get paid for their work so, technically, they are working for accommodation and food.

That’s why it’s important to be informed, to support each other and get organized. We are a bottom-up initiative which rests on personal experience of women, develops expertise and aspires to change the current state of affairs.
